Emily Baxter

i decided to look up Emily Baxter because she is really cool and has some crazy ideas and just so you know, Emily Baxter is not a real person, which is sad because i would have really liked to read her poetry, and she had some amazing ideas. i just thought that was cool :) kylie

  1. Emily Baxter is a cool character. I also think that it's pretty sad that she can't stay where she is without having her husband pursue her. It just proves how much more authority men typically had over women in this time.

  2. Also, I feel really bad for Miss Wilcox (Emily Baxter/Wilcox) because she actually has to like hide from her husband and runaway to France or else he will put her in an insane asylum. It appalled me that her own husband would do this just because she wrote thought provoking poems about women's suffrage. And that would be devastating if Miss Wilcox was sent to an insane asylum, she might even go crazy just being there...kind of like "The Yellow Wall Paper"....

  3. hmmm...that's an interesting connection. If her husband were to put her in an insane asylum just because she refused to quit her writing, that would probably mean women were very trapped because they couldn't do what they wanted without having their husbands approve.

  4. I couldn't believe that just because she was writing offensively her husband would send her to an insane asylum. i liked serafina's connection to "The Yellow Wallpaper" and it would be so sad if Miss Wilcox/Baxter went insane just because she was sent to a insane asylum because of her writing

  5. Just thinking about how hard it was for women during Mattie's time really makes me appreciate now how much freedom we actually have. Also, to think it got so bad for Miss Wilcox that she actually had to runaway from her husband twice is really upsetting. And now that she is going to France (another country!) just to escape him shows how she was feeling really trapped. Miss Wilcox also says how her husband has "many powerful friends".This probably just made it worse for her.
