Royal always, always only buys Mattie cheap, secondhand gifts. It shows that he doesn't care enough to try and get something better. Jerk.

Well, cheap second hand gifts don't necessarily mean that he didn't care...although that is an interesting observation and i wonder if the author did it on purpose...
